Hordes of Uninspired Scribblers

“The volume of writing is enormous, these days, and much of it has a sort of windiness about it, almost as though the author were in a state of euphoria. ‘Spontaneous me,’ sang Whitman, and, in his innocence, let loose the hordes of uninspired scribblers who would one day confuse spontaneity with genius. The breezy style is often the work of an egocentric, the person who imagines that everything that comes to mind is of general interest and that uninhabited prose creates high spirits and carries the day.”  – E.B. White

WordPress is inundated with writers.

Not that this is breaking news or anything, but it had to be said.  A new post is added to the search topic, Writing, about once every minute.  Seriously.  See for yourself.

So maybe the idea of blogging for exposure is becoming old hat– but don’t be discouraged!  Rising to the top through “hordes of uninspired scribblers” (White’s words, not mine) is a challenge no matter what your chosen medium.  I think we all could do well with this reminder from White: avoid windiness, don’t confuse “spontaneity with genius,” and avoid uninhabited prose.  The methods of sharing creative work may change, but there will never be any substitute for quality.

Write long and prosper.

  1. I agree with much of what you say…but I would add that “practice makes perfect”. Furthermore “if writing for its own sake, then have at it”. Sometimes it’s just nice to write whatever, be as “windy” as one would like. The beauty of the online world is that people have a choice as to whether to read it or not. Yes, there may be “Hordes of Uninspired Scribblers” out there (I’m one at the best of times), but that’s okay 🙂

  2. I think it is okay that so many writer’s are here. After all – we are all reading each other’s blogs and if we get something published, chances are they will read it!
